graduate thesis “Vergleichende Untersuchung zu den onymischen Umfeldern ausgewählter Tiroler Bergbauareale” (“Contrastive Analysis of Toponomastic Environments in Selected Mining Regions of the Tyrol”) examines and compares toponomastic environments of 87 mining regions of the Tyrol, based on four semantic fields: a) names referring directly to mining activities, b) names in connection to forest clearance and the timber industry, c) vegetation and d) stock farming. This contrastive analysis provides information on the influence of mining activities and its infrastructure on the surrounding toponomastic environments. Additionally, it detects specific parallels and characteristics within the naming schemes of various mining regions. Therefore, the investigation reveals a profound insight into the characteristics of naming schemes and denomination patterns. Furthermore, an attempt has been made to prove the influence of mining activities of the toponomastic environments. The selected mining regions and municipalities in the Tyrol without any mining activities have been subjected to a series of chi-squared tests. Finally, the toponomastic and the statistic results confirm that mining activities effect both the natural and toponomastic environment.
