Airbnb has been growing exponentially since 2008 which, if not regulated, can lead to frictions with competitors and local authorities. This master thesis sets out to research the impact of Airbnb on the accommodation sector in Tirol and especially Innsbruck the state capital. It should be clarified which effects Airbnb has on the other stakeholders and accommodation market. Furthermore, the characteristics and the motivations of the guests are identified. To address the research problem, the literature is reviewed and a quantitative research design is applied. Six experts have been interviewed, who have an insight knowledge into the economic situation of Tirol. In addition, smaller interviews with hoteliers and holiday apartment owners were conducted to gather the necessary data.
There have been many researches on Airbnbs influence in the housing and accommodation market in America (see Barron et al., Garza and Hooten and Zervas et al.)1 2 3 and the European touristic hotspots (see Gutiérrez and Neeser).4 5 As Tirol, as a whole state is a touristic hotspot, the results of the previews researches cannot be used for Tirol, so it was necessary to have an individual research for Tirol and Innsbruck. All of the recent researches identity disruption of the housing market and hotel industry, as Airbnb is getting a high popularity amongst tourists and travellers. It will be interesting to analyse, if the stakeholders in Tirol are having the same reservations.
